MITCHELL ENGLISH

Mitchell English is an Australian artist with a career spanning over thirty years – showing in Australia and overseas. His work has been described as "surf art" and has an undeniably Australian, coastal aesthetic.
This series continues my exploration of the body in landscape. Covid has provided the subject matter with ‘polite distancing’ – the subject matter (sun baking bodies) have compositionally become perfect – a spatial ready-made where each figure or couple is equidistant from each other. The use of surf boards, towels, umbrellas and sun shelters further reinforce the demarcation at play. 14th Century poet John Dunne once wrote ‘No man is an island.’ Perhaps if he was around today he might have rewritten it.
